Tell us about your OLSC….how did you get started? / Cuéntanos sobre vuestro OLSC … ¿Cómo comenzó todo?

Founded in March 2014 as ‘The Brighton Kop’ we became the ‘Official Liverpool Supporters Club – Brighton & Sussex’ in September 2016.

Fundado en marzo de 2014 como “The Brighton Kop”, en septiembre de 2016, nos convertimos en el “Club oficial de aficionados de Liverpool: Brighton y Sussex”.

The club was started by Benny Punk, one man with a vision, a lot of energy, and a deep passion for Liverpool FC and building community.  Benny was watching matches at a local pub where there were a good few Liverpool fans watching, but there was not enough atmosphere or interaction for his liking, so he went on a mission to address that.

By the end of the 2013-14 season The Brighton Kop had about 30 members and Benny thought that was probably as good as it would get for a city that is 270 miles from Liverpool – how wrong he was!!!

With the development of a small, but committed, management team early in the following season The Brighton Kop began to grow…. and continues to do so!!!

Our vision is ‘Building Community & Friendship Through Football’.

El club fue creado por Benny Punk, un soñador con mucha energía y una gran pasión por el Liverpool FC e interesado en crear una comunidad. Benny veía los partidos en un pub local donde solían congregarse un buen número de hinchas del Liverpool, pero no había suficiente ambiente e interacción para su gusto, así que buscó la manera de solucionarlo.

 ‘Kop Kits’ is the charitable project of The Brighton Kop which was launched in September 2016.  The aim of the project is to raise funds to supply football kits and equipment to disadvantaged young people. We do this through charity bucket collections, football scratch cards and prize draw raffles.

El objetivo del proyecto es recaudar fondos para suministrar equipos y material deportivo a jóvenes desfavorecidos. How many members do you have now, and where do you meet? / ¿Cuántos miembros sois ahora y dónde os reunís?

We have 645 registered ‘card carrying’ members (including 32 Junior Brighton Kopites –under 18s). There are nearly as many as 500 additional general members that are not registered paid up members. So in all about 1,150.

Until the end of last season, we have been meeting a large pub in central Brighton, the one featured in our film that we mention below.  However, we are now at a pub called the Montpelier Inn, also in central Brighton.

Tenemos 645 miembros registrados con Membership (incluidos 32 Junior Brighton Kopites de menos de 18 años). Hay casi 500 miembros adicionales que no son miembros de pago. Entonces, en total alrededor de 1,150.

Apart from watching the Mighty Reds, do you do anything else together? / Además de ver a los Mighty Reds, ¿hacéis algo más juntos?

 In the summer we hold regular family-friendly events for our members, such as a sports day, beach volleyball sessions and regular barbecues on Brighton Beach.

In December we hosted The Anfield Wrap (award winning podcast and radio show) for a live show in Brighton.  This was attended by 120 members and was very well received. We hope to do similar again this year.

Brighton Kopites FC is our football team we set up to allow local Reds to get together for weekly football sessions.  We have played 11-a-side friendlies and participated in a 6-a-side league and tournaments (winning our first ever tournament!)  As with all we do, the emphasis is on community and friendship.  After the weekly sessions we typically go for a few beers and passionate discussion about what is current with LFC.

En verano organizamos eventos familiares para nuestros miembros, como un día deportivo, sesiones de voleibol de playa y barbacoas regulares en Brighton Beach.

En diciembre recibimos The Anfield Wrap (galardonado podcast y programa de radio) para un show en vivo en Brighton. Asistieron 120 miembros y fue muy bien recibido. Esperamos hacer algo similar nuevamente este año.

Brighton Kopites FC también es nuestro equipo de fútbol que organizamos para permitir que los Reds locales se reúnan semanalmente para jugar al fútbol. Hemos jugado partidos amistosos y hemos participado en una liga y torneos de 6 por equipo (¡ganando nuestro primer torneo!) Como en todo lo que hacemos, el énfasis está en crear una comunidad y en la amistad. Después de los partidos semanales solemos tomar unas cervezas acompañadas de una discusión apasionada sobre lo que está al día con LFC.

 

What has been a highlight for your OLSC? / ¿Qué ha sido lo más destacado hasta ahora en vuestra OLSC?

In December 2017 we released a short film directed by a member of our group, Reuben Armstrong, with production support from The Guardian.  Co-released by The Guardian and Liverpool FC, the film documents how we uphold our vision of building community & friendship through football.

We were absolutely thrilled when the day after the film was released the one and only Jürgen Klopp mentioned the film and The Brighton Kop in his pre-match press conference before the Brighton match.

Peter Moore (CEO, Liverpool FC) also came to meet us for a pre-match pint at our partner venue before the Brighton match and later tweeted about the film.

“Such a wonderful video. Thanks so much for all of your support! This is emblematic of everything that we as a club stand for. “Community, Friendship, Fun.” A privilege to have a pre-match pint with The Brighton Kop.” 

We were also very proud to be shortlisted for LFC Supporters Club of the Year this season, just over 18 months after becoming an official supporters club.

 

En diciembre de 2017 lanzamos un cortometraje dirigido por un miembro de nuestro grupo, Reuben Armstrong, con el soporte en la producción de The Guardian. Co-distribuído por The Guardian y Liverpool FC, la película documenta cómo llevamos a cabo nuestro sueño de construir una comunidad de amigos a través del fútbol.

Estábamos encantados cuando, de repente, al día siguiente de la publicación de la película, el gran Jürgen Klopp la mencionó en su rueda de prensa previa al partido del Brighton.

How many days will your supporters club members go without sleep, due to celebrating and partying, when Liverpool finally win the league this year?

Answer for OLSC –Brighton & Sussex:

We are thinking 3 days minimum for many, and some members may go on even longer – this is the party we cannot wait for!
