Esta semana, Jack Willcox, socio del Liverpool durante casi 60 años, nos cuenta sus primeros recuerdos…
On the 23rd October 1954, I went with my dad to my first ever match at Anfield. We drew 1-1 with Bury, with a goal from Eric Anderson. Over the next 4 years, I went to a handful of games and during that time my heroes were Billy Liddle and Alan A’Court, who was at time the left winger for England – which was surprising as we were in the second division. For a youngster, these were frustrating times as we always seemed to come 4th in that division. I also attended the first floodlit games at Anfield and Goodison, both derby games.
When the 1959 season started, I was very lucky to get my first season ticket , for, what was then, the Kemlyn Road Stand. The first game of the season was a Reserves match, which we won 8-0 with a certain Roger Hunt scoring 3 goals. I went home singing his praises only to be told by my dad that “kids don’t often make it to the higher level”! I was incensed, but I only had to wait until 9 September to see his debut in the first team and score in a win over Scunthorpe. Roger played regularly that season and scored quite a few goals, but we still didn’t get promotion, even with our new manager Bill Shankly. His first game, a 4-0 home defeat by Cardiff gave us no indication of the success to come!
El 23 de octubre de 1954, fui con mi padre a mi primer partido en Anfield. Empatamos 1-1 con el Bury, con un gol de Eric Anderson. Durante los siguientes 4 años, fui a un puñado de encuentros y por entonces mis ídolos eran Billy Liddle y Alan A’Court, que a la vez era ala izquierda de la selección de Inglaterra –era sorprendente, porque estábamos en segunda división. Para un joven como yo, fueron tiempos frustrantes, ya que siempre quedabamos cuartos en esa categoría. También asistí a los primeros partidos con luz artificial en Anfield y Goodison, los dos derbis.
Cuando comenzó la temporada de 1959, tuve mucha suerte pues conseguí mi primer carnet para toda la temporada, estaba situado en lo que entonces era el Kemlyn Road Stand (ahora grada Kenny Dalglish). El primer partido de la temporada fue un partido de reservas, ganamos 8-0 con un tal Roger Hunt marcando 3 goles. Me fui a casa cantando sus alabanzas mientras mi padre me advertía que “¡Los niños no suelen llegar a un nivel superior! Me enojé, pero sólo tuve que esperar hasta el 9 de septiembre para ver su debut en el primer equipo y que además marcara en la victoria sobre el Scunthorpe. Roger jugó con regularidad durante esa temporada y marcó bastantes goles, pero aún así no alcanzamos la promoción, incluso con nuestro nuevo manager, Bill Shankly. Su primer partido fue una derrota por 4-0 en casa ante el Cardiff, ¡no nos dio ninguna pista sobre el éxito que estaba por llegar!
