2017-2018

Hace tan sólo unos minutos que se conoce que el Liverpool FC se enfrentará al Hoffenheim en la ronda clasificatoria para la Champions League y me encuentro reflexionando sobre la última temporada y lo que nos aguarda en esta de 2017-2018. Esta temporada estará marcada por nuestro 125 aniversario como club y, como incondicional aficionado que soy, todavía me emociono, siento el nerviosismo y la adrenalina dispararse cuando pienso en lo que podría ser otro año maravilloso para nosotros. Es precisamente esto una (de las muchas) cosas buenas de ser un aficionado del Liverpool FC: el sentimiento de esperanza. Antes de cada partido en Anfield, todos nosotros cantamos “al final de la tormenta hay un cielo dorado”. Para mí esa “tormenta” puede ser la pausa veraniega, pero también el sinónimo de una larga temporada repleta de difíciles encuentros y el “cielo dorado” el brillo, sobre L4, de títulos conseguidos  (y sí,  tengo un orden bien claro de los títulos que quisiera en esta temporada de 2017-2018)

Para ser honesto, tengo en alta consideración a nuestros jugadores – tenemos (en el momento que escribo estas lineas) un gran grupo: Matip, Lovren, Henderson, Lallana, Can, Coutinho, Firminho, Sturridge y Mané. Estos son los jugadores que me gustaría particularmente destacar. Pero también tenemos muchas jóvenes promesas, fundamentales en el equipo, que deben seguir trabajando duro, ganándose minutos de juego en cada partido y ayudando en el desafío que las competiciones, nacionales y europeas, que tenemos que disputar, suponen.

Pero si valoro a nuestros jugadores, tengo incluso en mayor consideración a nuestro entrenador. Me encantaría que nos entregara todo lo que nosotros, como Reds, deseamos. Está claro que es una gran persona – pienso que casi todos los clubes en Europa querrían tenerle como entrenador, y me gustaría que se convirtiera en una de nuestras leyendas, consiguiendo numerosos títulos. Es humilde, sin aires de superioridad, directo pero sobre todo, es honesto – un rasgo muy importante para un entrenador del Liverpool, siguiendo el ejemplo de otros tan ilustres como Shankly, Paisley,Fagan y Dalglish, por nombrar tan sólo a unos pocos. Creo que es evidente la mejora del equipo en el tiempo que lleva como entrenador y que ahora empezamos a ver su “gegenpressing”, su propio estilo de fútbol dentro del equipo.. Recientemente ha incorporado a Salah (un jugador veloz), Solanke (de gran destreza aérea y corpulencia) y Robertson (un lateral zurdo para impulsar y empujar a Milner y Moreno). Estoy realmente ilusionado con el trabajo realizado hasta ahora. Pero son precisamente estas las palabras clave: hasta ahora.

Tenemos un buen equipo que necesitamos mantener unido para luchar en todos los frentes. Sin embargo, aún necesitamos reforzar nuestra plantilla, incorporando a algún otro jugador de primer nivel, cosa para la que aún mantengo la esperanza. El mercado estival de fichajes, en su mayoría gracias al masivo incremento de ingresos por acuerdos de TV, ha visto y ha estado marcado por precios y firmas de infarto. Mantengamos a nuestros chicos unidos y añadamos además calidad al grupo. Tenemos en mejor equipo, un excelente entrenador y grandes jugadores, así que, agarrémonos el sombrero, abrochémonos el cinturón y disfrutemos de los altibajos de otra temporada apoyando a nuestros queridos Reds. Season preview 2017-2018

It’s just minutes after being drawn in the final Champions league qualifier against Hoffenheim and I’m reflecting on last season and what awaits us in 2017-2018. This season marks our 125^th year as a football club and, as a staunch fan, I still get the buzz, the nervousness and the adrenaline when I think about what could be yet another great year for us. But that’s one (of the many) great things about being a Liverpool supporter: a sense of hope. All of us sing “At the end of a storm there’s a golden sky” before every match at Anfield. Now, for me, that “storm” is a summer break with no football but that “storm” could also be a long, season with many, many tough games and the “golden sky” could be the resplendent shine above L4 with light reflecting from our trophy haul (and yes, I do have a pecking order of the trophy/trophies I’d like to see at the front of the 2018-2019 season photograph!).

To be honest I really rate a lot of our players very highly- we have (at the time of writing) a great core: Matip, Lovren, Henderson, Lallana, Can, Coutinho, Firminho, Sturridge and Mané. Those  are the players I’d like to highlight in particular. We also have a lot of good, young players who are also important members of the team and should be working hard for game time and helping us challenge on all fronts both domestically and abroad.

I rate our players highly and I rate our manager even more so. I would love him to deliver what all of us reds crave. He is obviously a great person- I think nearly every club in Europe would want him as their manager- and I’d love him to become one of our legends with a list of trophies. He is humble, direct, he doesn’t get caught up in his own sense of self importance but above all he is honest- an important trait for a Liverpool manager following such illustrious names as Shankly, Paisley,Fagan and Dalglish to name but a few. I think we have seen progression in his short time as manager and we can now begin to see his gegenpressing – his own brand of football on the team. He has recently added Salah (who has blistering pace), Solanke (who could give us more aerial prowess on top of having good feet and being a big lad) and Robertson (a specialist left back to push Milner and Moreno). I’m really excited by the business that has been done so far. But those are the key words so far.

We have a good set of players- we need to keep them together as a group in order to fight on all fronts. However, we still need a few more quality signings but I’m hopeful. The summer transfer window, thanks in the main to massively increased revenues through TV deals, has seen some absolutely crazy prices and signings. Let’s keep our boys together as a group and add some real quality to the group too. We have the best club, a brilliant manager, great players and these are exciting times so hold on to your hat, buckle up and let’s enjoy all the ups and downs of another season supporting our beloved reds.
