Tell us about your OLSC….how did you get started? / Cuéntanos sobre su OLSC … ¿Cómo comenzó todo?

The initiative started with Iomar Vargas creating accounts on Twitter (@LFCPuertoRico) and on Facebook (http://fb.me/LFCPuertoRico) some 5 years ago (December 2013).  Since I have no Twitter account it wasn’t until early 2015, when somehow I stumbled upon the LFC Puerto Rico Facebook page, that I found out that there were more Liverpool fans in Puerto Rico. That was great for me to know for I have been a Reds fan for close to 20 years; Michael Owen’s performance in the 1998 World Cup made me want to follow the team.

For the first couple of months the page was more about updates on the team, but by September of 2015 there were already enough of us to for a small group to watch the game against ManU. The game was around noon local time and the place where we were going to watch the game was not open yet, so we had to find a place to watch the game at the last minute. Luckily the restaurant next  the place we were going was open and they had a small terrance bar where we could watch the game. It was a bittersweet day since we lost that game, but we got to know each other (the 5 or 6 of us that were there that day).

Since then we have kept in contact. We have a chat on Facebook Messenger that we use on a daily basis.

 

La iniciativa la tomó Iomar Vargas creando cuentas en Twitter (@LFCPuertoRico) y en Facebook (http://fb.me/LFCPuertoRico) hace unos 5 años (diciembre de 2013). Como no tengo una cuenta de Twitter, no fue hasta principios de 2015, cuando por casualidad me topé con la página de Facebook de LFC Puerto Rico y descubrí que había más hinchas del Liverpool en Puerto Rico. Fue genial enterarme, porque he sido seguidor de los Reds desde hace casi 20 años; La actuación de Michael Owen en el Mundial de 1998 me animó a seguir al equipo.

Durante el primer par de meses, la página trató más sobre las novedades del equipo, pero para septiembre de 2015 ya éramos suficientes para que un pequeño grupo vieran juntos el partido contra Man U. El partido se jugó alrededor del mediodía, hora local y el lugar donde íbamos a ver el partido aún no estaba abierto, por lo que tuvimos que encontrar otro sitio para ver el partido en el último minuto. Por suerte, el restaurante al lado del lugar al que íbamos estaba abierto y tenían un pequeño bar terraza donde pudímos verlo. Fue un día agridulce porque perdimos ese partido, pero nos conocimos (los 5 o 6 que estuvimos allí ese día).

Desde entonces nos hemos mantenido en contacto. Tenemos un chat en Facebook Messenger que utilizamos a diario.

How many members do you have now, and where do you meet? / ¿Cuántos miembros sois ahora y dónde os reunís?

 

 

We have around 30 active members, although for some games (i.e. UCL Final vs Real Madrid) we got 40+ Red followers among 2 sites. We constantly communicate via mailing list, Twitter, and our Facebook page of 1000+ followers. We generally meet in the metropolitan area, but also travel to the west side to watch a couple of games. We had an official venue last year (Mango’s at Ocean Park) but after Hurricane María we lost the venue because of the damages done. Right now we meet at 24 Marketplace in San Juan, and at Café 413 at Rincón (West side).

Tenemos alrededor de 30 miembros activos, aunque en algunos partidos (es decir, Final de UCL vs Real Madrid) tenemos más de 40 seguidores Red divididos entre 2 sitios. Nos comunicamos constantemente a través de la lista de correo, Twitter y nuestra página de Facebook de más de 1000 seguidores. Generalmente nos reunimos en el área metropolitana, pero también viajamos al lado oeste para ver un par de partidos. Tuvimos un lugar de encuentro oficial el año pasado (Mango’s en Ocean Park) pero después del huracán María, perdimos el local debido a los daños causados. Ahora mismo nos reunimos en el 24 Marketplace en San Juan, y en el Café 413 en Rincón (lado oeste).

Apart from watching the Mighty Reds, do you do anything else together? / Además de ver a los Mighty Reds, ¿hacéis algo más juntos?

Some of us have made good friends inside the group and gone out for a drink or a bite to eat. Or we have stumbled upon each other while hanging out. Many times after the games some of us go out to eat or hang out for a while.

A couple of the guys are musicians and invite us when they have a show with their bands. I somehow (shamefully I might say) have never been able to attend any of their gigs for one reason or another, but I will get there, I promise.

Algunos nos hemos hecho buenos amigos y hemos salido a tomar algo o a comer algo. O nos hemos tropezado por la calle y salimos. Muchas veces, después de los partidos, vamos a comer o pasamos un rato juntos.

Un par de chicos son músicos y nos invitan cuando tienen un espectáculo con sus bandas. Por alguna razón (lo digo con vergüenza) nunca he podido asistir a ninguno de sus conciertos, pero lo lograré, lo prometo.

What has been a highlight for your OLSC? / ¿Qué ha sido lo más destacado hasta ahora en vuestra OLSC?

Considering that we started to have watch parties only 3 years ago it’s difficult not to say that it was the Champions League Final a couple of months ago. The road to get there was fantastic. We had 2 venues that we met, one on the metropolitan area, and other on the west side. Puerto Rico is full of Real Madrid fans (and Barcelona fans) so the venue was full of madridistas. I don’t remember how many of us made it to the metropolitan area, but we had a good turnout, even then we were clearly outnumbered. But we made some real noise that day and most of us stayed after the game was over, showing that even in defeat we are proud of our team.

Another highlight has to be when we were accepted as an OLSC after only a year of having our first watch party.

Have to give thanks to the support from the club and others OLSC (i.e. @LFCUSA) during our difficult time when Hurricane María hit us really bad last year.

It was a really good highlight that we could meet as a group for the first time since that time for the game vs Manchester City on January 14, 2018. We really had a good time, and that kept us going even though we lost our official venue because of the hurricane.

Teniendo en cuenta que empezamos solo hace tres años a reunirnos para ver partidos, es innegable que fue la Final de la Liga de Campeones hace un par de meses. El camino hasta llegar allí fue fantástico. Tuvimos dos puntos de reunión, uno en el área metropolitana y otro en el lado oeste. Puerto Rico está lleno de seguidores del Real Madrid (y del Barcelona), así que el local estaba lleno de madridistas. No recuerdo cuántos llegamos hasta el área metropolitana, pero tuvimos una buena presencia, aunque fuéramos claramente superados en número. Pero ese día hicimos algo de ruido y la mayoría de nosotros nos quedamos después de que terminó el partido, demostrando que incluso en la derrota estamos orgullosos de nuestro equipo.

Otro punto culminante puede ser cuando fuimos aceptados como OLSC, solo un año después de reunirnos para ver un partido.

Tengo que dar las gracias por el apoyo del club y otros OLSC (es decir, @LFCUSA) durante el difícil momento en que el huracán María nos golpeó cruelmente el año pasado.

También fue un evento muy bueno aquel en el que nos reunimos como grupo por primera vez para el partido contra el Manchester City el 14 de enero de 2018. Nos lo pasamos muy bien, y eso nos mantuvo unidos a pesar de que perdimos nuestro local oficial debido al huracán.

Anything else interesting we should know about your Supporters Club? / ¿Hay algo interesante que debiéramos saber sobre vuestro club de seguidores? 

Something that might be interesting about us is that we travel to different parts of Puerto Rico for our watch parties. Most of us are from the Metropolitan area, but our president and founder Iomar lives on the West side of the island and he usually travels to San Juan for watch parties, sometimes we make the 2 hour trip to Rincón to watch the games close to his home. We have also had watch parties in Ponce, on the South of the island, which is a trip of about 90 minutes.

As I mentioned before we have some talented musicians in our group. And they have music on Spotify and other streaming services. A couple of bands that include some of our member are Alegría Rampante, Los Nervios, J.Rochet and Doktor Zaius You should check them out.

We plan on giving to our community as well. We have made contact with “Golitos-fundación de fútbol para niños con Autismo”, a non-profit foundation that offers a sports soccer program adapted to children with Autism, to help in assisting the trainers and kids with the condition. Also we are planning on participating in other types of activities to keep restoring our island. Hopefully this year will be the one that we can make these strides in helping in our community.

Algo que puede resultar curioso es que viajamos a diferentes partes de Puerto Rico para ver los partidos. La mayoría somos del área metropolitana, pero nuestro presidente y fundador, Iomar, vive en el lado oeste de la isla y él generalmente viaja a San Juan para ver los encuentros, pero a veces viajamos 2 horas a Rincón para ver los partidos cerca de su casa. También hemos celebrado fiestas en Ponce, en el sur de la isla, un viaje de unos 90 minutos.

Como mencioné antes, tenemos algunos músicos talentosos en nuestro grupo. Y tienen música en Spotify y otros medios. Un par de bandas que incluyen a algunos de nuestros miembros son Alegría Rampante, Los Nervios, J. Rochet y Doktor Zaius. Deberías echarles un vistazo.

También planeamos dar algo a nuestra comunidad. Hemos contactado con “Golitos-fundación de fútbol para niños con autismo”, una fundación sin afán de lucro que ofrece un programa de fútbol deportivo adaptado para niños con autismo, para colaborar y ayudar a los entrenadores y niños con la enfermedad. También estamos planeando participar en otros tipos de actividades de restauración de nuestra isla. Esperamos que este año sea aquel en el que podamos hacer algo más para ayudar a nuestra comunidad.

A question from OLSC Kansas City: if you could repeat any Liverpool game in your home city, which would it be?

Any game really. It would be an honor to have LFC play any game in PR.

2005 Champions League Final. I remember the rollercoaster of emotions I felt during that game. It would have been great to watch that match with the group.

Another game that we could repeat as a group it will be the Europa League quarterfinal game in April 14, 2016 vs Dortmund at Anfield. What a thriller and emotions we had in the unbelievable comeback of our Reds.  Most of use were chatting as a group on our phones and watching the game at our homes.  The mix of emotions during the game, and how some of us were always waiting for the comeback by not letting others lose any hope… it was a miracle game and could not believe what we were witnessing. I think everyone of us cried, and it would have been great if we could be all in the same place to watch that game as a group.

Cualquiera. Sería un honor que LFC juegue cualquier juego en Puerto Rico.

La Final de la Champions League 2005. Recuerdo la montaña rusa de emociones que sentí durante ese partido. Hubiera sido genial ver ese partido con el grupo.

Otro partido que podríamos volver a ver como brach sería el de cuartos de final de la Europa League el 14 de abril de 2016 contra Dortmund en Anfield. El suspense y las emociones que sentimos en la remontada de los Reds. La mayoría lo vivimos chateando en grupo en nuestros teléfonos y viendo el partido en nuestras casas. La mezcla de emociones durante el partido y cómo algunos siempre creíamos en la remontada hizo que nadie perdiera la esperanza … fue un partido milagroso y no podíamos creer lo que estábamos presenciando. Creo que todos lloramos, y hubiera sido fantástico si hubiéramos podido estar todos en el mismo lugar para ver ese encuentro como grupo.

How are you feeling about the new season? / ¿Cuál es tu impresión cara a la nueva temporada?

Great so far, even after we just lost to Napoli. The last couple of games have been hard, but we knew that since the Champions League draw. We are in a great position in the Premier League and the next games in the Champions League are against the weakest team in the group while PDG and Napoli have to take points away from each other and no matter who does better between them it will benefit us. So we are in great position in both competitions at the moment and the team is not even playing at its best.

This season the team has more depth to deal with the congestion of the tough parts of the calendar and to deal with different types of opposition. I think we will battle for the Premier all the way.

Genial hasta ahora, incluso después de perder en Napoles. Los últimos dos partidos han sido difíciles, pero lo sabíamos desde el sorteo de la Liga de Campeones. Estamos en una excelente posición en la Premier League y los próximos partidos en la Champions League son contra el equipo más débil del grupo, mientras que PSG y Napoli tienen que quitarse puntos entre sí y no importa quién gane, nos beneficiará. Por lo tanto, estamos en una gran posición en ambas competiciones en este momento y el equipo aún no está haciendo su mejor juego.

Esta temporada, el equipo tiene más profundidad de banquillo para lidiar con la congestión del calendario y para enfrentarse a diferentes tipos de contrarios. Creo que lucharemos por la Premier hasta el final.

One other question: what would you like to know about other OLSC? And how would you answer that question yourself?

Specially from other OLSCs from smaller markets: how do you get the word out to get more Reds fans to join the group? I think we have done good so far in such a short period of time, but I would like to have some input on that.

Especialmente a otros OLSC más pequeños: ¿cómo correr la voz para que más hinchas de los Reds se unan al grupo? Creo que lo hemos hecho bien hasta ahora en un período tan corto de tiempo, pero me gustaría tener alguna opinión sobre eso.
