Paul Hodkinson. Tenía el apodo “Hoddy” en el instituto y como jugador en Inglaterra pero ya no lo uso en Madrid.

Paul Hodkinson. I had the nickname “Hoddy” at school and as a player in England but I don’t use it in Madrid.

¿De dónde eres? / Where are you from?

Soy de St Helens: una ciudad industrial en las afueras de Liverpool. Ahora diría que soy casi madrileño. El año que viene haré 10 años en Madrid.

I’m from St Helens: an Industrial town on the outskirts of Liverpool. I’d say I’m almost madrileño next year will be tenth year in Madrid.

 

¿Por qué eres del Liverpool? / Why are you a Liverpool fan?

Fue algo bastante polémico la verdad. La familia de mi padre es hincha del Manchester Utd y la familia de mi madre del Liverpool. Un amigo de mi padre me llevó a Old Trafford a los ocho años pero no sentí ninguna conexión ni interés. Al enterarse de esto mi tío materno (que vivía en Escocia) me llevó a Anfield lo antes que pudo la temporada siguiente. Fue algo que verdaderamente cambió mi vida.

Nunca olvidaré el sentimiento que me produjo el subir las escaleras, ver las luces, el césped en perfecto estado, ver las banderas y escuchar los cánticos por primera vez.

Se me puso la piel de gallina y se me hizo un nudo en la garganta al experimentar el ambiente especial de Anfield. Desde aquel día supe que pertenecer a este maravilloso club iba s ser algo muy mío y aún hoy sigo locamente enamorado. En ese primer partido creo que fue Barnes el que marcó el único tanto contra Derby County en 1989.

In truth it’s quite a controversial story. My dad’s family are Manchester Utd fans and my mum’s family are Liverpool fans.

One of my dad’s friends took me to Old Trafford when I was 8 but I never felt any sort of connection or had any interest. My (maternal) uncle (who lived in Scotland) on finding this out took me to Anfield as soon as he could the following season.

It was a day that truly changed my life.

Walking up the stairs, seeing the lights,the pitch in perfect condition, seeing the flags and hearing the chants for the first time well the feeling I had is something I will never forget. I had goosebumps and a lump in my throat as I experienced Anfield’s special atmosphere for the first time. From that day on I knew that belonging to this wonderful club was definitely me and I’m still completely in love with the club. In that first game I think it was Barnes that scored the only goal against Derby in 1989.

Jugador favorito del Liverpool (u otro team) / Favourite Liverpool (or other team) player?

Es difícil responder a este pregunta ya que tenemos muchos jugadores buenos.

Normalmente diría que los atacantes son mis preferidos pero últimamente tendría que decir que es Virgil van Dijk.

Es una máquina- sabe leer el partido, es elegante, rápido, juega con calma, toma la decisión correcta en cada situación y cuando la pelota está en el aire sabes que la va ganar una vez tras otra. Es un excelente jugador y me da en la nariz que es incluso mejor persona. Me encanta su humildad.

It’s difficult to answer this question as we have so many good players.

Normally I would say that attackers are my favourite players but recently I’d have to say Virgil van Dijk.

He is a machine- he knows how to read the game, he is elegant,quick, he plays with a sense of calm, he makes the right decision in every situation and when the ball is in the air you know he is going to win it time and time again. He is an excellent player and it seems he’s an even better person. I love his humility

Antes de aceptar la oferta de trabajo que me traería a Madrid busqué si había peña del Liverpool. Si no había no me mudaría. Afortunadamente la peña existía. El Triskel es como casa. Wendy, Jesús y todos los que trabajan allí son gente maravillosa. Estamos muy contentos de tener una sede en el centro de Madrid con este ambientazo.

Ahora tengo allí amigos que considero son mi familia – haría todo por ellos y lo saben. En resumen es un sitio guay para ver los partidos juntos.

Before accepting the job offer that would take me to Madrid I had to know if there was a Liverpool supporters club- if there wasn’t I wasn’t moving. Fortunately the club already existed. The Triskel is like home. Wendy, Jesus and everyone who works there are wonderful people. We are really happy to have a base in central Madrid with this amazing atmosphere.

Now I have friends here who I would consider more as family – I’d do anything for them and they know that. In short it’s a great place to watch the games together.
